Frequently asked Questions...
What should I do if my child is experiencing a difficult time with morning transitions?
The start of the school year is always difficult for some children. This is all very normal. As a mother of 4, I will be there to comfort your child and guide them into the school day. It has been my experience, that most children settle down within 15 minutes. It is important that you reassure your child that they are safe and you will return at the end of the school day. The quicker you are able to say your goodbye, the sooner your child will be able to transition into the school day. I can assure you that goodbyes are more difficult for the parents than the children!
What should I do if my child will not be in school?
Please call the school as soon as you know your child will not be in school (475-6750). When your child returns to school, place a dated note in their folder with the excuse for being absent. Please also make sure my name (Mrs. Swierzewski) and First Grade is included on the note.
What is the best way to get in touch with you?
I can always be reached through my e mail: [email protected] or by phone at 518-475-6750. I am also available to meet any day before or after school (except Wednesday mornings).
How do I pay for my child's lunch?
School lunches and breakfast are provided at no charge.
Will my child have homework?
Each week your child will come home with a homework assignment with daily assignments. A cover page will be attached to explain each assignment. Please have your child complete the assignment at their leisure throughout the week. Homework should be kept in your child's folder daily. I will look over your child's work as he/she complete assignments, but the actual homework assignment will not be collected until the end of the week. (Please do not have your child complete too much homework on one night).
What should my child wear to school?
To foster independence and positive self-esteem in first grade, you are encouraged help your child find comfortable clothing that he/she can fasten totally by him/herself. Zipping, snapping, buttoning, tying, and fastening require special coordination and control of the small muscles in children’s hands. It is important that you give your child these opportunities at home so they can perform the tasks independently in school. If your child is having difficulty with a particular piece of clothing, help him/her make another choice before coming to school. I want to create a positive environment where your child feels successful. Be sure to put your child’s name on coats, shoes, hats, mittens, scarves, book bags, etc.
**All children are expected to tie their own shoes, please practice this skill at home.
***Our class will go outside daily, weather permitting. While your child may love sandals, these are not the safest form of footwear! It is difficult to run on the blacktop and children often complain about wood chips that easily get caught between their foot and their sandal.
